Why anxiety disorder sufferers can feel totally worthless, and the solution to their problem.

Let me say from the get go that I am not a medical person, nor have I any professional standing in the anxiety disorder marketplace

My qualifications are personal ones in the sense that I am able to draw on the very long time, over 13 years, that I was a sufferer myself. Plus, I have read and studied the subject widely and have amassed a lot of information both from those who practise in the field, and also from fellow sufferers.

The question Am I worthless, is one which anxiety sufferers continually ask themselves as a lot truly believe they have no worth, neither to society nor to themselves or their friends and family.

anxiety disorder sufferers tend not to discuss their problems with close friend and family. They can feel wierd, unclean even, and believe there will be some mental stigma attached to them if they do open up. This heightens their own isolation and feeling of worthlessness.

Not talking to anyone, not seeking help, and more importantly not acknowledging to THEMSELVES exactly what they are suffering from can enhance this feeling of worthlessness as time goes by.

The first step towards the ultimate shedding of this emotion is the self realisation, and acceptance, of the disorder one has. It is a lonely place having anxiety disorders, a very lonely place, and it can be frightening. This feeling of worthlessness can lead to all sorts of other darker problems, from manic depression to self-harming, and it must not be taken lightly.

People need to understand they are just as special as the next person. They are unique, one of God's children, and are not to blame for what has befallen them. This is not of THEIR doing, but the first step towards treating the disorder most certainly IS of their doing, and it starts with what I have outlined above i.e. self acceptance, and then opening themselves up so they can be helped.

I have to tell you this is easier to say than to do, particularly opening themselves up publicly.

And to anyone reading this who is approached by someone with such a disorder, please ensure you attach no stigma to them in the way you react to their overture,

They are an individual, probably in some sort of personal torment, seeking help. Listen to them, do not judge or criticise them. Help them to find what they seek.

Do bear in mind that the am I worthless feeling can actually be increased by the anxiety itself. The feeling of worthlessness increases the anxiety, which makes them feel even more worthless, and so it can go on.

The message to close on here is a heartfelt and very simple one. If you are a sufferer, you are a unique individual, very special and most definitely NOT worthless. You have an ailment which can be cured if you want it to be. What you have to do is acknowledge what is ailing you and seek help.

This is exactly what happened in my own case, and I know from reading about others that they had the same experience.

To those who are approached by someone with an anxiety disorder, simply listen to them, they are in a dark place, and the very act of talking to you about it can be excruciatingly painful. PLEASE LISTEN TO THEM. And then do all you can to ensure that they seek help.

It is difficult to appreciate just how helpful this can be to someone, and how much it can do to both put them on the path to recovery, and also help with them getting rid of that awful feeling of being no worth to anyone, themselves included.

Like most sufferers, my battle to find my solution was a difficult one. But from the time I accepted to myself what my ailment was, I now know that I was on the road to seeking a cure.

We all want to be in control of our lives, and not be controlled by our inner demons, whatever they may be. When control is lost, so the feeling of worthlessness creeps in and can become pervasive. Conversely, take control back, decide that it is you who is the master, and your self-esteem will immediately improve.

Accept that you have an anxiety disorder, start talking to others about it, seek help and thereby regain control of your life. Your feeling of your own worth will benefit hugely and your personal self-esteem will rise accordingly. The act of discussing your most personal feelings with people is not easy, for some it is an immense challenge. But once that challenge is overcome, the road gets much easier, and you will start to feel good about yourself again.
